Abstract

A total of 1023 selected articles published in 2016–2019 related to mobile learning were examined and classified according to the categories in this research: 40% of these articles used quantitative approaches, 18% of them used mixed, and 13% of them were literature reviews. The published studies were analyzed according to research model, sample size, sample level, learning fields, subject-area classification, data collection tool, data analysis technique, dependent variable, independent variable, mobile device, number of authors, and publication year. The findings were analyzed and interpreted as a percentage and frequency. This research will be useful for reviewing current research trends related to mobile learning studies, indicating potential research on the topics, and revealing the needs of the field.

Author Biographies

Gizem Yıldız, Gazi University and Yüksek İhtisas University

Lecturer and PhD student. She was born on December 2, 1994 in İzmir.  She graduated from Anatolian Vocational High School. She graduated from Gazi University, Faculty of Education, Department of Computer and Instructional Technologies Education. As soon as she completed her undergraduate education, she started her master's degree same department and in 2018 she started working at Turkey Notary Association. In 2019, when she completed her master's degree, she started to work as a faculty member at Yuksek Ihitisas University Vocational School and she is still continuing. Since 2019, she is a PhD student at Gazi University, Department of Computer and Instructional Technologies.

Abdurrahman Yıldırım, Gazi University and Ministry of Education

Teacher and PhD student. He was born on November 18, 1991 in Elazığ. He graduated from Balakgazi High School. He graduated from Fırat University, Faculty of Education, Department of Computer and Instructional Technologies Education. After his graduation, in the same year, he started his master’s at Fırat University, Faculty of Education, Department of Computer and Instructional Technologies Education. He completed his masters in 2017. In 2014, He started to work as an Information Technologies Teacher at the Ministry of Education and he is still working as a teacher in this institution. Since 2018, he is a PhD student at Gazi University, Department of Computer and Instructional Technologies.

Bedreddin Ali Akça, Gazi University and Hitit University

Lecturer and PhD student. He was born on December 1, 1985 in Ankara. He graduated from Kaya Bayazıtoğlu Super High School. He graduated from Gazi University, Faculty of Industrial Arts Education, Computer Education Department. During his undergraduate education, he worked part-time as an animation producer in companies and as a content manager in distance education. After graduating from university, he worked as a programmer and product manager in software companies for 4 years. He taught Mobile Programming for 1 semester at Ankara University, Elmadağ Vocational School. He completed his master's degree in Management Information Systems in Gazi University. In 2017, he started working as a lecturer at Hitit University, Osmancık Ömer Derindere Vocational School and he is still continuing. He is a PhD student at Gazi University, Department of Computer and Instructional Technologies.

Ayşe Kök, Gazi University and Ministry of Education

Teacher and PhD student. She was born on April 4, 1986 in Konya. She graduated from Meram Konya High School. She graduated from Selçuk University, Faculty of Education, Department of Computer and Instructional Technologies Education. After her graduation, in the same year, she started to work as an Information Technologies Teacher at the Ministry of Education and she is still working as a teacher in this institution. Besides, she completed her master's degree in 2018 from Necmettin Erbakan University, Department of Computer and Instructional Technologies. Since 2018, she is a PhD student at Gazi University, Department of Computer and Instructional Technologies.

Açelya Özer, Gazi University and Kırşehir Ahi Evran University

Lecturer and PhD student. She was born on January 5, 1988 in Mersin.  She graduated from Anatolian Vocational High School. She graduated from Gazi University, Faculty of Commerce and Tourism Education, Office Management Education. As soon as she completed my undergraduate education, she started her master's degree and in 2010 she started working at Demir Export, the leading company of the Koç Group in Mining Sector. In 2012, when she completed her master's degree, she started to work as a faculty member at Kırşehir Ahi Evran University Social Sciences Vocational School and she is still continuing. Since April 2019, she has been working at the Higher Education Council Project Development and Support Department. At the same time she is a PhD student at Gazi University, Department of Computer and Instructional Technologies.

Serçin Karataş, Gazi University

Serçin Karataş is a professor at the department of Computer Education and Instructional Technology, Gazi Faculty of Education, Gazi University. She undertook graduate studies at Gazi University, Turkey (MSc. Computer Education) and at Ankara University, Turkey (Ph.D. Educational Technology). Dr. Karataş has over twenty years' experience in focusing on the theoretical and applications of distance education. Her research area includes theories and applications of distance education, designing and developing content for e-learning, instructional design, design principles for  online learning, interaction applications for e-learning, MOOCS, creativity for (e)learning and gamification in learning. Dr. Karataş gives many lectures, seminars and trainings in these fields from undergraduate to doctorate level, both face-to-face and online. Dr. Karataş is the coordinator of a completed Erasmus + Strategic Partnership project and a partner of another ongoing Strategic Partnership project. She took part in TÜBİTAK and BAP projects as instructor, researcher, consultant and practitioner. Since 2006, she has served in various roles such as manager, content development specialist, storyboard writing, subject area specialist, teaching technologist, learning management system management since the distance education studies started at Gazi University. Between 2018-2019, she worked as the Director of Gazi University Distance Education Application and Research Center.
